The Worm Castle story

The Worm Castle is the product of over 15 years’ worm farming experience and the passion of one man – Shayne Rogers.

Originally a printer by trade, Shayne moved to central Victoria and founded a worm farm near the picturesque town of Kilmore. He specialised in raising red wigglers and tiger worms, mainly for domestic use and imported and distributed quality American worm farms around Australia.

However Shayne was dissatisfied with the quality and design of available worm farm models and decided to develop a worm farm that could handle our conditions and make worm farming easy for any Australian.

Thus the idea for the Worm Castle was born.

Shayne worked alongside local designers and manufacturers to create the initial prototypes and spent over two years perfecting the product until he was satisfied with the design.

When the Worm Castle was finally released to the public, it was initially available in a Bluestone colour only, before a coffee-coloured Mocha variety was later added. Later again, the Gumleaf Green colour was added to the range, consolidating the Worm Castle as one of the most attractive worm farm ranges in the world.

Shayne continued to grow a significant supplier network, with retailers in most states and territories by early 2022.

Carrying on the legacy

Early that year, Shayne moved interstate and sold the business to one of his retailers, Peter Heidenreich from South Australia.

Peter has worked since on fulfilling Shayne’s vision to take worm farming mainstream, continuing to grow the Worm Castle network of retailers and innovating with new packaging and marketing to bring the Worm Castle to an even wider audience.

Peter’s vision is to combine easy-to-understand education with quality worm farming products, enabling anyone to confidently set up and run their own worm farm, and thus compost their food and garden waste at home.
